Nature-Based Solutions

Nature-Based Solutions

Investing in nature and the environment enhances our resilience to the existing and growing effects of climate change and natural disasters alongside the potential impacts of urban and rural development activities.

Our nature-based solutions and sustainable development leverage natural processes to address environmental and social challenges, integrating ecology with engineering, and delivering solutions that are effective, efficient and resilient to acute and chronic stressors.
Investing in nature to enhance our resilience.

Our Nature-Based Solutions

Our nature based solutions are rooted in applied scientific research and practical experience, ensuring that our solutions are both effective and efficient.

We specialise in developing solutions that mimic or utilise natural processes, protecting and enhancing ecosystem health while providing tangible and intangible benefits for our communities and iwi partners.
Integrated Catchment Planning Services

Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD)

Integrating water management, ecosystem function and urban design means that Morphum’s expert team can design regenerative and liveable urban environments.

Our WSUD services focus on understanding any site within the context of its natural water cycle, ecological values and connected receiving environments to inform designs which effectively and intentionally mitigate water quality and quantity impacts and connect communities with water.

We incorporate green infrastructure, such as wetlands, rain gardens and permeable pavements, into urban developments to support ecological health and leave a positive legacy on our environment and communities.

If you’re unsure of what would work best for your project, or would like technical advice, reach out and we can help.

Biodiversity & Habitat Restoration

Many of our unique habitats around Aotearoa New Zealand have experienced unprecedented environmental challenges since the arrival of humans through both rural and urban land use change.

These habitats and the endemic biodiversity they support are irreplaceable with most found nowhere else on earth. With our passion, knowledge and experience with habitat restoration and enhancement projects, we have the opportunity to respect and revive these neglected areas, restoring biodiversity and ecosystem health to our landscape.

With our combined team of environmental scientists and engineers, we are motivated to support efforts to turn around the historical impacts and integrate thriving urban ecosystems back into the places we live.

Wetland Design that balances community use, flood mitigation and biodiversity restoration

Wetland Design

Morphum's founding goal is to co-create a thriving ecosystem for generations to come. Restoring what has degraded or been lost is core to achieving this goal, and as part of our catchment services, we aim to rehabilitate degraded areas, enhance biodiversity and improve water quality.

Our work enhances mauri and restores balance to these areas, through our work in developing adaptable engineering and scientific solutions to the issues facing our natural spaces.

Climate Adaptation Planning

Well informed and locally responsive climate adaptation plans protect lives, habitats and critical infrastructure during current and future climate events.

Morphum supports clients in protecting vulnerable natural resources, vital infrastructure and mitigating communities from the risks from flooding and coastal erosion with comprehensive plans that help communities go from reactive to proactive in preparation for the future.

Through combining spatial planning with applied climate and natural systems data we support public and private clients to understand risks, prioritise actions and develop bespoke and comprehensive plans which enable communities to continue to thrive in the face of uncertainty.

To prepare for increased weather events from climate change, our on-site water team designs and manages the construction of small water and wastewater systems for communities, businesses and facilities that can provide continued access to water during worst-case scenarios.

You can find out more about our on-site water services on our water engineering services.

Wetland Design

Wetlands naturally offer a wide range of ecological benefits, including water filtration, hydrology/flood management, diverse habitats for indigenous wildlife and community connection with nature.

Regrettably, through land-use change and development Aotearoa New Zealand has lost over 90% of our freshwater and coastal wetlands with those that remain at continued threat.

Because of this, restoring historic wetlands, enhancing existing degraded wetlands and constructing wetlands to manage water quality is a priority. Morphum strives to maximise these widespread benefits, create natural spaces that enhance communities and biodiversity.
