Hardstand and Closed-Loop Washwater

Monitoring & Compliance

Boat maintenance and washdown activities require a clearly designated controlled work area; consequently, waste or washwater containing antifouling paint residue at the Waiheke Boating Club needed to be collected and disposed of in accordance with the Hazardous Substances (Disposal) Regulations 2001.

Morphum Environmental was engaged to provide concept design, detailed design and construction supervision for a new hardstand area, and for the washdown water collection, recycling and filtration system. The concept design provided a basis for the project team to undertake further stakeholder consultation, and collaborate on outcomes. The site development also involved a sea wall, walkway, and playground upgrades – collaboration between the designers was a key element to the project’s success.

The project required Morphum Environmental to provide an area allowing the boat club to:

  • Isolate solid waste and potentially contaminated wastewater generated from boat maintenance activities from the natural and marine environment,
  • Isolate anti-fouling paint (during removal and reapplication) from the natural and marine environment,
  • Isolate the first flush of stormwater falling on the washdown area from the natural and marine environment, and collect it for reuse as washwater,
  • Collect, treat, store and allow for the removal of contaminated wastewater, while reusing the filtered washwater,
  • Maintain usability of the site for the hauling, moving and maintenance of boats, and
  • Consider and provide for possible future changes in usage (i.e. increased haulage).

Key Deliverables:

  • Concept plan and design report
  • Preliminary cost estimate
  • Detailed design and specification
  • Survey set out
  • Construction supervision
  • As-built drawing
