In seeking the development of a strategy to reduce the frequency of wet weather overflows from the Kaitaia wastewater network, the Far North District Council engaged Morphum to work together with them in finding a workable solution that satisfied Northern Regional
Council’s requirements while still being affordable to Kaitaia ratepayers.
Morphum completed a holistic review of available information from previous investigation work that had been completed including I&I studies, flow data and model calibration reports,
as well as CCTV investigations to understand the existing condition and performance of the network before pushing on to develop future state models in collaboration with specialist modellers on this project.
Morphum then led the team in developing 70 potential options for improvement before the benefits of those options were tested through the hydraulic model. With those results in hand Morphum were able to complete a cost benefit analysis and work with the client to set a
containment standard that delivered material improvements to the community and the environment, all within the cost constraints of council.
